Careers in Horticulture case study - botanic/heritage garden horticulture student - Shaun Ward

Shaun Ward

What course/training are you doing and how long does it take?

I’m completing the level 4 diploma in horticultural practice at RHS Wisley. It’s a two-year programme that sees learners employed in the garden while completing a timetable of lectures, masterclasses and trips.

Can you give an example of some work/studying you are doing now?

The work is incredibly varied. My team has a focus on conservation and biodiversity, creating “dead hedges” and habitat piles so the wildlife feels as welcome as the visitors. I’m also helping with the seasonal cut back of the grass garden and I’m designing a garden for a local foodbank.

How have you found it so far?

The diploma really is second to none. I’ve grown and developed immensely during my time here and now feel like I am reading the bigger picture of horticulture fluently.

What advice would you give others considering this training/course?

Just go for it. It’s two years of paid study in one of the world’s great gardens, culminating in a level 4 qualification. The team is passionate and students are truly valued.
