Careers in Horticulture case study - arboriculture/forestry trainee - Alfie Turner

Alfie Turner

What course/training are you doing and how long does it take?

I’m studying the BTEC level 2 technical diploma in arboriculture and forestry. Part of the course is work experience, and I’ll be working for London-based Forbes Tree Care. The course runs for two days per week — Thursdays and Fridays — with GCSE maths and English on a Monday.

Can you give an example of some work/studying you are doing now?

I’m working on unit 4, tree-felling and ground-based operations, learning how to fell trees safely and process them for timber production. The trees are common ash (Fraxinus excelsior), but are they are diseased.

How have you found it so far?

I’ve really enjoyed the course and the people I’m working with. I have improved my confidence and teamwork skills. I’m also the level 2 course representative.

What advice would you give others considering this training/course?

If you love being outside, this is the course for you. It requires you to work in a team for most of the time and you really gain benefits from the course. I can remember when I first left secondary school I didn’t have good communication skills. I joined the course to get into the industry and have loved it ever since.
