What course/training are you doing and how long does it take?
I’m completing the horticulture or landscape operative apprenticeship (level 2), taking the landscape pathway. The course runs over 18-24 months, one day a week in college, plus working for an employer in a role that aligns with the course.
Can you give an example of some work/studying you are doing now?
I work at South Gloucestershire Council, recently with colleagues in the biodiversity team to prune fruit trees at some small orchard sites that have been established in public spaces. This has allowed me to practice pruning techniques learnt in college and to benefit from the practical experience of the local authority team.
How have you found it so far?
I’m a mature student, switching from an office-based career. A key reason for choosing this qualification was the opportunity to learn in a new environment while still earning a wage. I’ve enjoyed being more physically active in my work and the combination of getting a broad foundation of knowledge at college while also learning from colleagues with a variety of backgrounds. I’m very fortunate to have a supportive employer who has allowed me to work with several teams within the organisation, gaining experience in a variety of different aspects of grounds maintenance.
What advice would you give others considering this training/course?
Working with both college and employer, there’s the opportunity to explore a variety of aspects of horticulture and/or landscaping work. Highlight the areas that interest you most with your manager/college assessors, to discuss how you can get the most out of the apprenticeship.
