Various bursary schemes made available to help horticulture students

Five students have been awarded £1,000 scholarships by the David Colegrave Foundation (DCF), one of several groups offering cash to ease training costs.

The awards follow a record number of applications from 15 colleges across the UK for support from the horticultural charity. The winners are Samantha Jackson (Capel Manor College), Fern Carroll-Smith (Bicton College), Louis Dinan (Scotland's Rural College), Aleksandra Butowska (Myerscough College) and Abimbola Oyelade (Writtle College). The deadline for applications is on 31 January.

The DCF also offers a fiveyear BPOA/Peter Seabrook Bursary of £1,000 a year for students studying commercial horticulture.

Meanwhile, the Geoff Hamilton New Gardeners Foundation supports students with bursaries up to the value of £4,000 to help with living costs while studying for a foundation degree.

The Horticultural Development Company (HDC) is taking applications for its undergraduate final-year bursary scheme, worth £4,500 per student.

The HDC is also offering three crop-science scholarships through Harper Adams University for postgraduate integrated pest management students, worth £5,000 each.
