Boyd is currently undertaking an SVQ Level 3 in parks, gardens and greenspace through Glasgow Clyde College while working as a gardener for In-Work Enterprise.
He came onto the project through a scheme called Future Jobs, part of the Inverclyde Community Development Trust Programme. After completing his Level 3 Parks Gardens and Green Space qualification, his dream is to broaden his knowledge of the horticulture industry in other locations.
Boyd thanked his employer Alan Maliska and tutor Derrek Carson for all their help and support.
He added: "It is a great honour to win a Lantra award and I will use this to spur me on to make a success of my career in horticulture."
Carson said: "John has good attention to detail, and gives 100% commitment to all his work, so it is no surprise to us that he has been recognised for his efforts. I’m sure this will give John the confidence and self-belief to go on and achieve great things in his chosen career. We wish him all the best."
Runner-up McKenzie has been doing a Modern Apprenticeship SVQ Level 2 in Horticulture through Daldowie Training Centre, while working for the Southside Housing Association in Glasgow, where she hopes to secure a full-time job after graduation.
The awards, organised by Lantra Scotland, were presented to trainees at a gala dinner in Dunblane by farmer and TV presenter Adam Henson last night (2 March). Speaking at the event, Henson reminded the audience of the importance of fostering new talent and investing in skills to ensure a lasting future for Scotland’s food and drink sector and the wider rural economy.
"I’ve really enjoyed presenting these awards and meeting Scotland’s top trainees and learners from the land-based and aquaculture sector," he said.
"It’s inspiring to see such talented people getting the support of employers and training providers as they start their careers within these key industries.
