Anderson, 20, is doing a Modern Apprenticeship SVQ Level 3 in Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces with Shetland Island Council and SRUC Elmwood. He works as an apprentice gardener for the council and has completed an SVQ Level 2 in horticulture, where he was awarded a prize for best SVQ. He also runs a popular monthly blog on the council's website, providing advice on gardening and local events. After completing his apprenticeship, he aims to become a permanent member of staff as a gardener and possibly head gardener one day.
Gallacher, 18, is doing a Modern Apprenticeship SVQ Level 2 in Horticulture, while working at Pollok Country Park for Glasgow City Council. As a member of the training team, he has been involved in a number of projects in 2015, including "Love your Plot," a BBC event in George Square. The team also worked at the Gartnavel Royal Hospital where horticulture therapy is used to help patients. He was recently short-listed for APSE's Horticulture Apprentice of the Year Award.
Organised by Lantra Scotland, the Land-based and Aquaculture Learner of the Year Awards recognise and reward Scotland's most talented trainees from across Scotland's rural sector, as well as helping encourage employers to invest in skills for the future.
There are a total of 15 categories as well as eight industry accolades covering agriculture, aquaculture, equine, horticulture, game and wildlife, trees and timber, land-based engineering, fisheries management and environmental conservation industries.The award will be presented on 3 March at the Doubletree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro Hotel.
