Book review: Cull of the Wild

Subtitled Killing in the Name of Conservation, author Hugh Warwick asks if we should eliminate invasive species for the greater good.

Cull of the Wild

Killing in the name of conservation: squirrels, parakeets and cane toads are in the wrong place at the wrong time, like sentient weeds.

Australia and New Zealand suffer more than most with their unqiue fauna, threatened by introductions such as rabbits, rats and possums.

It's complex. Possums, introduced from Australia to NZ for food and fut, spread TB to livestock, damage native vegetation and eat native bird eggs.

Warwick is keen to listen to views from outside 'extreme bubbles' on both sides of the argument (kill everything suspect, kill nothing). There are other paths too: contraception, relocation and stronger laws.

Kudos to ecologist Warwick for wrangling with the subject, for which he finds no easy answers.
