Ran Lyu, 25, an international student from China, is currently a second year BSc Horticulture student at Writtle. She is interested in commercial horticulture, particularly post harvest.
She said: "It is such an honour! I really appreciate that the David Colegrave Foundation has given this substantial support to horticulture students. This scholarship will provide me with the much needed resources for chasing my goal, and assisting me to pursue my aspirations in horticulture. I feel very lucky."
Jeff Colegrave, DCF Trustee, says, "This year’s Scholarship Season drew in a great calibre of applications from students which only goes to highlight the promising level of talent coming into the horticultural industry. Those awarded are all a great investment with interests that include production and commercial horticulture as well as plant pathology and new technology."
David Colegrave was one of Britain’s leading seedsmen, founding the UK’s largest ornamental seed company, Colegrave Seeds (now Ball Colegrave). During his career, Colegrave took a keen interest in supporting and promoting the development of young people, and it was with this in mind that the Foundation was launched shortly after his death. The David Colegrave Foundation is administered by the Horticultural Trades Association.
In total the DCF awarded nine students over £12,500 worth of Scholarships including the DCF’s own Student and Markham-Colegrave Scholarships, as well as several Sponsored Scholarships from the South West Growers Show, Ball Colegrave and British Protected Ornamentals Association - Peter Seabrook.
Over £46,000 worth of scholarships has been awarded in the past four years to students studying at 12 UK colleges.
