Scholarships awarded to inspire young horticulturists

The David Colegrave Foundation has awarded sponsored scholarships to young horticulturists. They are:

- Lesley Palmer, Easton College, Floranova Ornamental Horticulture Research Scholarship, £1,500.

- Grower's Study Tour visiting protected ornamental nurseries across the east coast of America, organised by the British Protected Ornamentals Association (BPOA) and Horticultural Development Company, with the Ball Colegrave Scholarship, £2,500.

- Jamie Satterthwaite, Scotland's Rural College, BPOA/Peter Seabrook Bursary, £1,000.

On the study tour, Michael Smith of the BPOA technical committee and WD Smith & Son director said: "In the early days of my career I was lucky enough to be sent on a similar tour. Visiting these nurseries was an inspiration as well as spending so much time with established growers on the tour. We want to give some young growers the same opportunity to help build a future for our sector."

Scholarship season is now closed for this educational year, reopening in October 2014. For more details, see www.davidcolegrave foundation.org.uk.

The Society of Chemical Industry Horticulture Group has also launched the David Miller Travel Bursary Award for 2014. Two travel bursaries of £250 each are available to young plant scientists or horticulturists. See www.soci.org/Awards/Technical-Group-Awards/ David-Miller-Award.aspx.
