Adam McGowan of Glasgow-based McLaren's said: "As we are proudly Scotland’s largest production nursery in terms of variety, we wanted to showcase what we could offer on a national scale. As a family business we continue to invest in the quality of our plants, following our growing tradition of exposing them to the hardy Scottish climate. This brings out the best in the plant’s resilience, even if it takes slightly longer. For over half a century we have focused on refining how we grow our stock, using the Scottish landscape to our benefit. We have recently completed some intensive production development, including the build of a one-acre greenhouse in 2019. We take time in our production, growing slowly and deliberately. As a company we have grown in harmony with our stock therefore showcasing at Four Oaks felt like a natural progression. We have now started sending deliveries all over the UK to new customers we connected with last year. We have connected with teams from Swansea to Newcastle, who we are now delighted to call customers."
The nursery prides itself in growing most of its own stock. Around 75-80% of what you see on the nursery is own grown. McLaren's also works with key stockists such as Plantline, based in Holland, and Zelari in Italy. Zelari will be attending McLaren's annual trade open day on Wednesday 9 April.
About McLaren's Nurseries Ltd:
Founded in 1973 by time-served electrician Robert McLaren and his wife Ruth, McLaren’s started as a passion project-the couple had a love of growing cut flowers and vegetables. They rented a small holding in Inchinnan, Renfrewshire to start a nursery. Two seasons later Robert purchased 2.5 acres in Ardrossan, which would become Stanley Nursery. The family operated there for many happy years, purchasing our current site just outside Lugton in 1980. What was once just a bare, undrained field has been transformed by the family into the McLaren’s nursery we are today. We now extend to 50 acres, operating on 25 and counting and 15 of which, are under glass or polytunnel. We are very much a family business, three generations of the family work on site! We like to get our hands dirty; we erect our own tunnels and we continuously develop and expand to suit growth and demand.
McLaren’s Nurseries Ltd are proud to supply both retail and wholesale customers with whatever they might need, including but not limited to garden centres, garden sections of DIY stores, landscape gardeners, charities, golf courses, the public, and architects.
