Hervey-Brookes designed a garden at the RHS’s newest flower show to celebrate the institute’s centenary. At 616sqm, the IQ Garden was one of the largest gardens to have been built at any RHS Show won Gold, Best in Show and Best Construction.
IQ president Dr Miles Watkins praised Hervey-Brookes for his ‘outstanding commitment and work towards bringing quarrying to a wider audience’ at the IQ’s annual conference.
The garden had a potential audience of 120,000 members of the public and aimed to tell the whole story of quarrying including the biodiversity increases integral to land restoration, something which the IQ is proud of but is not widely-known.
Hervey Brookes is the first person not directly involved in the industry to be awarded this accolade which is normally reserved for past presidents of the institute.
He said: "I am stunned, it is such as honour to be recognised in this way and to have had a small part in telling the story of the industry, the people who work in it and who are so passionate about it."
