The contest, which will see six horticultural colleges build sustainable gardens, was based in the car park at Earls Court for its first two years. TV gardener and competition organiser David Domoney said the change will mean the gardens are seen by even more visitors.
"The competition has been identified as a major part of the show," he said. "It will be right in the middle. It can't be any better - the gardens are going to be seen by hundreds of thousands of people."
The colleges taking part will be Chichester, Capel Manor, Askham Bryan, Bridgwater, Shuttleworth and Writtle. Each will be given a 5.5 x 4m plot to plan and design a sustainable urban garden. They will be awarded medals by judges led by Alan Titchmarsh. Winners of the titles "Best At Show" and "The People's Choice" will also be decided.
The competition, which is now in its third year, is held in association with the Prince's Foundation for Building Community.
The Ideal Home Exhibition opens in London on 15 March and the show will run until 1 April.
