Gardeners unite on Twitter to issue call for a 'more balanced' view of horticulture

A Twitter group network called "Old Hort" has called for a "more balanced" view of horticulture.

The 140-member group, founded by former Houghton Lodge head gardener Andrew Bentley, includes TV gardener Christine Walkden, Hillier plant buyer Pip Bensley and grower Rob Hardy among its members.

Bentley tweeted the Institute of Horticulture (IoH), which runs the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition: "Maybe a balanced view of horticulture as a career for those of us too old for #younghorts would be good? See @OldHorts too!"

IoH president Leigh Morris said: "The @IoHort represents ALL horticulturists. Hopefully more will join so we do it better #NoBrainer."
