Diana Memorial playground to get multi-million pound upgrade

The 20-year old Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens, London is to be refurbished.

The Royal Parks is seeking a design and build supplier to replace two major structures in the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground.

The two-year £2 million project is for the refurbishment and play improvement of the site.

Works required are the removal of the existing structures, and the design, manufacture, and installation of replacement of two large pieces of play equipment: the Galleon (Lot 1) and the Tree House Encampment (Lot 2)

The Royal Parks said: "After more than 20 years the current installations are reaching the end of its anticipated lifespan. This brief will form part of an open invitation to specialists in the design and manufacture of play equipment to develop costed proposals for the replacement of the existing structures. The supplier will provide a sustainable solution to the decommissioning and removal of the existing structures working with [The Royal Parks] for its post life recycling/ repurposing.

"The resultant design proposal must be true to the Peter Pan story, demonstrate design excellence, and respond to the character of the playground and Kensington Gardens as a whole respecting the Royal Park setting."

The Royal Parks says it hopes to complete procurement as soon as possible "to allow maximum time for the design and build process and sign-off". This is to ensure RIBA Stage 3 will be reached by April 2024 to submit a planning application with sufficient time for determination before construction commences.

A 15-month period is proposed for design, manufacture, and onsite installation, followed by an added five-year maintenance contract. The maintenance contract would then be renewed on a five-year ongoing contract subject to regulations.

The value of contract has been set at between £1,000,000 and £5,000,000.

The contract is scheduled to run from 8 January 2024 to 30 January 2025.

The deadline date for receipt of expressions of interest is 29 August 2023.
