Careers in Horticulture case study - garden design student : Matthew Bracken Hunt

Matthew Bracken Hunt

What course/training are you doing and how long does it take?

I’m studying the gateway level 2 certificate in garden design at Capel Manor. This course lasts a year, attending one day a week. I moved into a property with a big garden, which sparked my interest in garden design, and I’m using my fine art background.

Can you give an example of some work/studying you are doing now?

My first couple of garden designs focus on two distinct styles. I’m working on a project that distinguishes between soil types and plants that thrive in different situations, looking at evolved plant adaptations.

How have you found it so far?

I love being on the course and have been able to take advantage of several great opportunities. I’m part of a great tightknit cohort who support each other. For example, I invited the class to a work day at a garden I’m co-developing in Cambridge, and everyone helped to plant the design.

What advice would you give others considering this training/course?

Complement your study time with as much practical experience as possible. Start creating a network of professional connections to gain practical experience. Work with your class to explore all the possibilities that come your way.
