Apprenticeships scheme leads to two regional awards for The Landscape Group

The Landscape Group has won two regional awards in this year's National Apprenticeship Awards.

The Coventry-based green services company won newcomer and large employer of the year in the West Midlands awards at a ceremony in Birmingham.

The Landscape Group embarked on an apprenticeship programme within the business two years ago educating line managers, and working with training providers to identify why apprenticeships are so important for the future success of the business.

Employing apprentices was built into its 10-year contract maintaining the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and it now has more than 30 apprentices across the country.

Human resources director San Johal said: "It is a great honour to receive this award because it reflects the hard work and concerted effort that has gone into establishing and embedding the apprentice scheme within The Landscape Group.

"We have overwhelmingly found that apprentices within our business have enabled us to look at many facets of what we do in a different light, through not only providing fresh and innovative thinking but by applying their own apprentice experiences to more traditional ways of operating.

"The social value that we have been able to achieve through the operation of the apprenticeship scheme has been one of the more rewarding organisational aspects, since we have on a number of occasions been able to recruit apprentices from hard to reach and excluded groups."

Karen Riley, national apprenticeship service deputy director employer and delivery services central said the organisation wanted it to become the norm for young people to choose between an apprenticeship or university as equally prestigious routes to a great career and secure financial future.

All the West Midlands winners will now proceed through to a final national judging stage, and will have the opportunity to be crowned as the national winner in their category.

The top 100 entrants will feature in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, which will be produced by the National Apprenticeship Service in partnership with City & Guilds.

The top 100 and the national award winners will be revealed during the national ceremony on the 13 November at the LG Arena in Birmingham.
